Nia, The Talita Lang, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on the 30th of October 1970. The mother of her child, Talita (nee Gillman), was a teacher and printmaker.

Her dad, Doughtry Long, was an instructor at a high school and poet. Long is a half-sister to her older half-sister named Sommore (born Lori Ann Rambough) and is an actress and comedian.

When Long was just two old girls, her parents divorced. Later, she relocated with her mother to Iowa City, Iowa, after which she moved to South Los Angeles.

Her father was from Trenton, New Jersey. She graduated from Westchester High School in Los Angeles in 1989; she has also been to the Roman Catholic all-girls high school St. Mary’s Academy, located in Inglewood, California.
