Early Life
Robert John Wagner Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 10, 1930. The mother of his son, Hazel, was a phone operator.
Her father, Robert Sr., was a salesman on the road who earned an enviable profit in selling paint to the automobile industry and lacquer to Ford, which was then used on their dashboards. At the age of seven and his family relocated to Los Angeles. His father was said to have been able to retire in Southern California.
They even built a custom residence at Bel Air, overlooking the Bel Air Country Club, that took more than an entire year to construct.

He was placed on a train and taken off to the Hollywood Military Academy. Robert attended the four military colleges throughout Southern California, and many of his fellow students were kids of actors who were famous. Wagner completed his studies at Saint Monica Catholic School in 1949.
Career
In the 1950s, Robert began to work as an actor. His first appearance was the role of an uncredited actor in the 1950s film “The Happi Years.” He was assigned by Twentieth Century Fox when he was only twenty years old. The first film he made with Fox was “Halls of Montezuma” in 1951, a World War II film. Richard Widmark starred with Wagner in a minor role.
He also later played a supporting role in “The Frogmen,” which featured Widmark. 1952’s “With A song in my heart” was the film in which Wagner first came to the public’s attention for his small but effective role as a shell-shocked soldier.
After playing a few more small roles in different films, He began to earn leading roles. By 1953, he had a leading role in films such as “Beneath the Twelve Mile Reef,” “Prince Valiant,” “A Kiss Before Dying” (for which he was awarded lots of praise from critics) as well as “Between heaven as well as Hell.” 1954 saw him as a star in the well-known Western “Broken Lance.”
Paramount then enlisted Wagner to film 1956’s “The Mountain,” in which he was cast for the part of Spencer Tracy’s twin brother. After returning Fox the film, he was a part of “Between Heaven and Hell” and “The True Story of Jesse James,” acting in the lead role directed by Nicholas Ray, both of which were box-office disappointments.
He tried to restart his career by playing in his then-wife Natalie Wood’s “All the Good young Cannibals” in 1960.
In 1961, Wagner and Wood formed their own production company, Rona Productions. Wagner created “The War Lover” in 1962 along with Steve McQueen, which was filmed in England. After Wagner and Wood broke up, he moved to Europe for a couple of years.
He was in “The Longest Day,” The Condemned Of Altona,” as well as “The Pink Panther,” which was a major success in 1963, but Wagner’s performance was so minor that he was mostly ignored.

Personal Life
Wagner wrote in his memoirs that he had been involved in relationships with Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Collins, and other entertainers who were extremely popular.
He married Natalie Wood in December 1957 and divorced her in 1962. Wagner was married to Marion Marshall in July 1963 and had a daughter named Katie.
They divorced in the year 1971. Wagner got involved with Tina Sinatra from 1970-1972, and when they broke their engagement, Wagner rekindled his romance with Wood, and they got married on July 16, 1972. The couple had one daughter named Courtney.
Natalie Wood died after drowning close to the vessel Splendour while it was moored at Catalina Island on November 29 31st, 1981. On board were Wagner, Christopher Walken, and Dennis Davern, the captain of the Splendour.
There was no explanation for why Walken’s wife Georgianne wasn’t during the voyage. According to Wagner, who was present the night he fell asleep, Wood was not there.
The autopsy report showed scratches on Wood’s body and arms and abrasions to her cheek. It also revealed the blood alcohol level was 0.14 percent. Additionally, two medications were found, such as a motion sickness pill and a painkiller.
In his autobiography “Pieces from My Heart,” Wagner said that he was in a heated argument with Wood before her disappearance.
Two witnesses on a nearby boat claimed to have heard a woman yelling for help in the dark. In the end, Los Angeles County coroner ruled her death to be an accident caused due to hypothermia and drowning.
The case was brought back in November 2011, when Davern, the ship’s captain, declared publicly that he admitted to lying to the investigators during the initial investigation and that he witnessed Wood and Wagner disputing that evening.
He claimed that Wood had been in a relationship with Walken and that Wagner became angry with jealousy and that, after Wood went missing, Wagner had refused to allow Davern to turn on the lights and alert the authorities. Davern asserted that Wagner was to blame for the death of Wood.
In February of 2018 in February 2018, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department identified Wagner as an individual of significance for the inquiry into the death of Wood. Wagner denies any role in the death. After Natalie’s demise, Wagner was a stepfather for her daughter, then 11. Natasha Gregson Wagner.
Within a few months after Woods died, Wagner began dating actress Jill St. John. After eight years of dating, they got married in the year 1990.

Real Estate
In 1983, Robert purchased $220,000 for one-plus acres in Los Angeles’ Brentwood neighborhood.
The neighborhood was built in 1940 by famous architectural firm Cliff May to be used as his private residence for the family. He later purchased the adjacent property and constructed a 1.6-acre compound with the main house, a guest home, tennis courts, and stables for horses. Wagner also approached Cliff May and hired him to finish a complete renovation and expansion.
In August 2007, Wager and St. John sold the property for $14 million. The purchasers of the property were Rita Hogan – heiress to a Japanese video game company, and their husband, Richard Edlund – an Oscar-winning cinematographer. Somehow, Richard and Rita did not move into the house. It was vacant for the subsequent 12 years. Unfortunately, Rita died in 2019. The Wagner/St. John’s mansion was auctioned off in January 2021 for $ 11 million.
After the sale of Brentwood Mansion in the Brentwood area, Robert and Jill St. John moved out and into Aspen, Colorado, where they have owned a home since 1995. They also have an apartment located in Los Angeles.
